Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS)

We focus on confidence, curiosity, independence and a love of learning.

In Reception, children learn through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), a play-based curriculum designed to build strong foundations for lifelong learning.

Learning is organised into seven areas of development. These are grouped into three Prime Areas and four Specific Areas, which work together to support children's learning, wellbeing and development. Children are assessed through ongoing observation and supported towards the Early Learning Goals (ELGs).

How the EYFS curriculum is organised

The Prime Areas provide the essential foundations for learning, helping children develop communication, confidence, relationships and physical skills. As children grow in these areas, they are increasingly able to access the Specific Areas, where they begin to develop early reading, writing, mathematics, creativity and knowledge of the world around them.

Prime Areas

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children develop confidence, friendships and emotional understanding. They are supported to manage feelings, take turns and build positive relationships.

Communication and Language

Children develop speaking and listening skills through stories, conversations and rich language experiences across the day.

Physical Development

Children build strength, coordination and control through daily movement, outdoor learning and fine motor activities.

Specific Areas

Literacy

Children learn to read and write through phonics, storytelling and meaningful writing opportunities linked to play and interests.

Mathematics

Children explore number, shape, pattern and measure through practical, hands-on learning experiences.

Understanding the World

Children explore people, places, nature and technology through real-life experiences and enquiry-based learning.

Expressive Arts and Design

Children express themselves creatively through art, music, movement, role play and imaginative exploration.
